Turmeric - The Benefits Everyone Needs to Know About!
Turmeric, the robustly flavoured spice with a rich golden colour to match, is making a comeback for Instagrammers and health gurus worldwide. So, we all have to ask, “What does turmeric actually do for our health?”
Is It All Hype?
It’s easy to understand why we are quick to roll our eyes at every single health fad rolled out by hundreds of influencers or health “experts” trying to make a quick buck. Unlike some other so-called “health supplements” making a comeback, this one really isn’t a hoax! Turmeric is an ancient and popular spice that has been documented in ancient healing practises for over 4000 years in South Asia! 4000 years is a tad too long for a flash-in-the-pan trend, so what makes it so popular that it stands the test of time as a health supplement? Let’s investigate!
What Is Turmeric?
Turmeric, botanically known as Curcuma longa, is a flowering plant that barely reaches 90 centimetres tall and produces both a flower and a rhizome (a stem underground.) Found in the expansive open forests of India and in some areas of Asia, evidence of its use has been discovered in New Dehli dating back as early as 2500 BC. Its place as a culturally and medicinally important ingredient was set in stone by the ancient Indian style of natural healing knowing as Ayurveda, which is still practised today. What the ancient people of India and South Asia knew exactly about turmeric is unclear but it was widely and regularly used as ancient medicine, therefore its benefits and results were obviously noticeable! In time, scientists figured out why!
The Secret Ingredient
While the taste of turmeric is fantastic and is readily available on supermarket shelves to liven up any kitchen, there is one big ingredient that makes turmeric - well, turmeric! It’s called curcumin, and its the reason turmeric is so effective at supporting natural health. Curcumin is the substance that provides both the famous vibrant colour and the powerful properties that makes it more than just a tasty addition to our food.

How to Get Your Daily Dosage of Turmeric?
While curcumin is a proven wonder of the natural world, the actual content of it in turmeric is not high enough to reach the recommended intake of it from the food spice alone. (unless you are pouring the stuff in! We do not recommend this!) Adding a turmeric tea or latte to your diet can’t hurt, not at all (they are delicious), but be wary of expecting the full effects and benefits from just adding a small amount of turmeric to your daily diet.
Curcumin is best absorbed into your body alongside black pepper and/or healthy fats. Without these two ingredients helping the curcumin along, it will be poorly absorbed into your bloodstream and you won’t feel the full benefits. While these tips will help you absorb the turmeric you put in your food more efficiently, you still will be hard-pressed to reach the recommended dosage to feel the full effects of curcumin from the spice all on its lonesome.
